Zambia has recently become the stage for a surge of entrepreneurial momentum during the first Bridging Gaps social entrepreneurship workshop — and what a resounding success it was!
According to the World Bank, around 375,000 youth are expected to enter the Zambian labor market each year by 2030. However, only about 137,000 productive jobs are being created annually. This growing gap makes youth unemployment one of the most pressing challenges in the country.
Recognizing that many young entrepreneurs struggle to sustain their businesses due to a lack of capital or knowledge in building viable ventures, Over the Mountain Foundation (OTMF) — a Zambia-based nonprofit and our local partner dedicated to empowering youth and women through sustainable development initiatives, has stepped in to bridge the gap.
Led by co-founder Mudeya Madyenkuku, OTMF organized a full-day entrepreneurship training in a picturesque garden. 23 inspired entrepreneurs were introduced to the fundamentals of project design, a crucial step in transforming a simple idea into a concrete, actionable business plan. The training session was centered on the Bridging Gaps social business concept as well as guiding materials from the International Labour Organization — following methods that are pragmatic, human-centered, and innovative.
Participants learned how to structure their entrepreneurial ambitions on strong foundations: identifying a need, understanding their market environment, and thinking long-term. Some of them shared their takeaways from the training:
From this training, I’ve learned that before starting a business, I must first conduct a market survey to understand which product or service is in demand. Also, the B-E-S strategy will act as a guide in managing my business effectively.
I used to spend all my profits, but this month I’ve finally saved something!
One of the highlights of the workshop was the high interest in our interest-free loans. In a context where traditional funding is scarce, especially for less formalized groups, our signature Pay-It-Forward creates a ripple effect in the communities. Many participants saw it as a genuine opportunity to transform their daily lives, expand their businesses, and above all, support their families and uplift their communities.
Many entrepreneurs were especially interested in developing eco-friendly projects. The concept of climate-smart gardening, along with innovative ideas like solar-powered hair salons and print shops, generated strong interest. Participants showed a clear willingness to build sustainable businesses that that are both environmentally friendly and financially viable.
We are looking for a funder to collaborate with us in bringing the first Pay-It-Forward microloans to these entrepreneurs. Sounds like you? Reach out to info@bridging-gaps.org!
